The Southern Illinois University volleyball team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the Saluki Invitational. The Salukis swept Alabama A&M in straight sets (25-16, 25-11, 25-16) but fell to Miami (Ohio) in four sets (18-25, 25-19, 19-25, 19-25) in the nightcap.
How it happened - Alabama A&M
• The Salukis held the Lady Bulldogs to just six kills in the opening frame and limited Alabama A&M to a .045 hitting efficiency. Southern, meanwhile, hit .324 with 17 kills in the opening set, which included six first-set kills from Rachel Maguire. SIU never trailed in the opening set, as it got out to a 4-0 lead and led 7-1 before the Lady Bulldogs rallied to tie the set, 11-all. The Salukis broke the tie by scoring 11 of the next 14 points.
• Southern extended a 6-4 second set lead to double-digits behind a 14-4 run. The Salukis benefited from hitting .476 in the frame and didnt record an attack error.
• SIU hit an even .400 in set three and put down 18 kills on 35 swings with just four errors. Southern went ahead 8-2 and led by as many as nine before using a 5-2 run to seal a 25-16 set win.
How it happened - Miami (Ohio)
• The Salukis took their first lead of the opening set, 14-13, on an ace by Alison Thomas. The RedHawks responded with a 9-1 run that effectively put the set out of reach.
• Neither side led by more than two through the first half of the second set with the RedHawks taking a narrow 15-14 lead into the media timeout. The Salukis regrouped during the timeout and reeled off seven-straight points behind Kat Wagner at the service stripe to build a commanding 22-15 advantage. Miami (Ohio) cut its deficit down to four (23-19), but back-to-back points by the Salukis tied the set score at 1-all.
• The RedHawks scored four of the first five points in the third set and held a five-point edge at the halfway point, 15-10. The Salukis could get no closer than to within four though, as Miami went ahead 2-1 with a 25-19 win.
• Miami (Ohio) scored the first five points of the fourth set. The RedHawks maintained a five-point lead at the midway point of the set but Southern rallied to get to within two, 20-18. Miami (Ohio) scored five of the final six points in set four to seal a 3-1 win.
• Patience Brown hit a career-high .529 in the sweep of Alabama A&M. The senior middle hitter put down nine kills on 17 swings without recording an error and added two aces.
• Rachel Maguire hit a career-best .391 and tied her personal-best with 12 kills in the win over the Lady Bulldogs. It marked the second time this season that the sophomore from Bloomington, Ill. has recorded 10-plus kills.
• Maggie Nedoma made the most of her swings against Alabama A&M, as she hit at a .458 clip with 13 kills on 24 swings. In SIU's nightcap against Miami (Ohio), Nedoma finished with a match-high 16 kills to record double-digit kills for the fifth-straight match.
• Alison Thomas served a career-best four aces to go along with 14 digs in the win over Alabama A&M. She followed with 19 digs, four assists and two aces in the loss to Miami (Ohio) and has recorded double-digit digs in four of SIU's five matches this season.
• Alayna Martin dished out 31 assists to go along with four digs and two kills in the win over Alabama A&M and followed with 29 assists, 15 digs and a season-high four kills against Miami (Ohio). Martin was especially lethal attacking from the setter position and kept the RedHawks back row defense on their toes.
