
Swim and Dive wins 18 events at Indiana State

TERRA HAUTE, Ind. - The Southern Illinois swimming and diving program faced-off against conference opponents Indiana State and Ball State Saturday afternoon at the Vigo County Aquatic Center.
The Saluki men defeated the Cardinals 211-89 and the women's team fell to an undefeated Sycamores squad 204-96 and the Cardinals 191.5-108.5.
Southern won 18 events and took second in 13 events. SIU was led by Chris Cole and Fu Kang on the men's side, who each accumulated three victories. On the women's side, junior diver Beibei Ji picked up wins in two events.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS
Saluki men's team
The relay team of Alex Netzel, Chris Phillips, Robert Chelberg and Jimmy Dooley took second in the meets opening event with a time of 1:38.19. The quartet was less than a second shy of the first-place Ball State relay team (1:37.45).
The trio of Chris Cole, Kevin Kluge and Michael Stern went one-two-three in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:39.86, 9:47.38, 10:05.14). The victory was Cole's first of three and Stern's mark was a season-best.
Cole earned his second victory in the 200-yard butterfly with a season-best time of 1:57.12. Saluki swimmer Drake Manuello placed second in the event (2:00.96).
Cole's third win came in the 200-yard backstroke (1:55.07), an event he had not swam in this season before today. Fellow Saluki Ryan Lehane finished in third with a time of 1:58.12.
Reilly Garman swam to first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:43.83. The win was Garman's first of the season in the event. Just .03 seconds behind in second was teammate Zheng Yang Yeap (1:43.86).
The sprinting duo of Garman and Yeap continued their impressive day in the 100-yard freestyle, with Yeap swimming to victory this time around. Garman placed second with a time of 47.11. In third for the Salukis was Chelberg (48.22).
Yeap capped off his successful day with a win in the 500-yard freestyle (4:42.27). Kluge collected his second runner-up finish of meet with a time of 4:49.51.
Southern went one-two-three in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke. Fu Kang claimed first in both events for the Salukis with times of 55.20 and 2:02.40. His mark of 55.20 was a career-best and the third-fastest in SIU history, surpassing Calvin Kolar's time of 55.21 set during the 2014-15 season. Phillips finished in second in the 100-breast (59.48), followed by Dooley in third (59.69). In the 200-breast, Dooley took second (2:10.20), followed by Manuello in third (2:11.85).
The Salukis also finished one-two-three in the 200-yard IM. Kang recorded the victory — his third of the meet — with a time of 1:53.91. Phillips was second (1:57.74) and Manuello took third (1:58.01).
In diving, Kai Hoffmann-Dussome garnered his second-consecutive sweep over a Mid-American Conference opponent with scores of 284.10 in the one-meter dive and 310.35 in the three-meter dive. The junior bested Saluki diver Eli Mercado, who took second in the one- and three-meter (254.60 & 306.15).
Lehane earned his first victory of the season in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.01, eluding three Cardinal swimmers in the process.
Tamas Hajtman also gave the Salukis key points with a win in the 100-fly, timed at 51.07.
The SIU relay team of Hajtman, Dooley, Garman and Yeap concluded the meet in style, placing first in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:08.78).
Saluki women's team
Senior swimmer Jordan Ries claimed second in the 200-free with a time of 1:57.30. With the finish, she has placed second or better in the event four times this season.
Audrey Snyder gave the Southern women's team their first victory of the day as she swam away to first in the 200-fly with a time of 2:06.96. It is the second-straight week she has won the event.
Beibei Ji's dominant junior season continued with wins in the one- and three-meter diving events (287.50 & 305.55). Ji beat out the Cardinals Rachel Bertram (280.70 & 298.95) in both events. The native of Taiyuan, China now holds 10 victories on the season with today's sweep.
Emma Brazeau recorded SIU's final win on the women's side in the 100-fly (58.18). The senior won the event last week versus Arkansas-Little Rock as well.

The Salukis stay on the road to compete tomorrow at the Butler Invitational starting at 11:00 a.m. CT. The invitational will be held at Fishers High School and feature St. Louis, Xavier, Valparaiso, Illinois, IUPUI, Ball State and Youngstown State.
