Brittney Patrick scored a career-best 19 points to lead the Salukis past the Aces.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Brittney Patrick scored a career-high 19 points and was one of four Salukis to score in double figures as the Southern Illinois women's basketball team blew past the Evansville Purple Aces, 80-60, Saturday afternoon inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse.
Southern never trailed in the win. The Salukis scored the game's first basket and used an 11-0 mid-way through the second quarter to open up a double-digit lead that held up.
"What I liked about Britt's game today was her shot selection," sixth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "She had really good shot selection, she was really patient and she pushed the ball down the floor. (Evansville) never left Nicole Martin alone on the block, so she took advantage of that and attacked the other block. She had some really smart plays throughout the game."
Patrick shot 64% (7-of-11) from the field for 19 points and added a block, a steal and two boards. It was her largest scoring outburst since Jan. 26, 2018 when she had 15 points in SIU's 71-69 overtime win over Missouri State and it marked the eighth time in her career that she has scored in double figures.
It only took me three years," Patrick said of her career-high with a chuckle. "Before the game one of our managers said 'all I need from you is eight points'. So I'm just glad I came out and got more than that."
Nicole Martin tallied her seventh double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds while Abby Brockmeyer added eight points and eight boards.
Makenzie Silvey reached double figures for the ninth-straight game, as she scored 13 points and tied a career-high with seven rebounds. Kristen Nelson was the fourth Saluki in double figures, as she scored all 10 of her points in the first half on an efficient 4-of-6 shooting. 10 of SIU's 12 players that dressed scored at least one point in the win.
The Salukis (15-14, 8-10 MVC) secured their fifth-straight winning season with the road victory. Southern did so by once again dominating the glass, as they won the battle of the boards by a 46-to-33 margin. It marked the sixth-straight game in which SIU has won the battle of the boards.
"We've been fighting the details all year- you've got to pay attention to the details and do all the little things right such as grabbing the ball with two hands," Stein said. "I don't know how many times I've said that in the last three weeks. That is going to be the key to our success- is how much we buy into the details of the little things."
Back-to-back baskets by Patrick ignited an 11-0 Saluki run in the second quarter that ballooned SIU's lead to 29-14. Southern led by as many as 19 before five-straight Evansville points made it 39-25 at the half. SIU outscored Evansville, 23-to-14 in the frame in part thanks to a 12-to-6 edge on the glass during the period.
The second half was more of the same. Five-straight points by Patrick gave Southern its largest lead of the afternoon at 52-31 with 5:34 to play in the third but Southern's offense stagnated. SIU made just 1-of-11 after that point, and Evansville closed the third on a 13-4 run to cut SIU's lead to 56-44.
The Purple Aces scored five-straight points to get to within nine to open the fourth. Patrick again squelched Evansville's run with a transition layup that again sparked Southern's offense.
Southern has now won four-straight road games, and four of its last six games overall, as it heads into the 2019 MVC Tournament in Moline, Ill. SIU will be the sixth seed and will take on No. 3 seeded Northern Iowa on Friday, March 15 at 8:30 p.m.
