The Southern Illinois track and field team heads South for the inaugural Kentucky Open, hosted by the University of Kentucky on Saturday at the UK Outdoor Track and Field Complex.Â
With cold, wet weather in Saturday's forecast in Lexington, the meet's schedule is subject to change.Â
The meet is slated to begin at 10 a.m. with the women's hammer throw competition. Running events kick off at 1:10 p.m. with the men's 4x100 relay.Â
Surveying the field
The meet leaves little doubt to that fact that it will serve its intended purpose of being a showcase of college track and field programs from the state of Kentucky. Nearly every school from the state is represented at the meet, from all levels. NAIA's Lindsey Wilson College, DIII's Centre and Spalding as well as DII's Kentucky Wesleyan all have representation at the meet. There are still a slew of Power Five Conference programs that will be competing, including Ohio, Eastern Kentucky, Ball State, Milwaukee, Louisville, Cincinnati and Indiana, among others. Kentucky's women come into the meet ranked No. 6 in the latest USTFCCCA's national ranking while their men's program sits at No. 27.Â
