Late goal propels Salukis to exhibition win over Tennessee Tech

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Southern Illinois University women's soccer team picked up the program's first-ever exhibition victory after defeating the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles 2-1 on Sunday night.Â
Freshman midfielder Kaitlin DuCharme scored the first goal of the evening in the 67th minute to give the Salukis their first lead. The Golden Eagles trailed for all of 16 minutes before Tennessee Tech's Nora Vicsek scored off of a penalty kick in the game's 83rd minute to tie things up.
Nearly two minutes later, freshman forward Madison Meiring scored the go-ahead goal off of an assist from teammate Kailyn Stone to put the Salukis up 2-1.
Freshmen goalkeepers Dariana Mihalache and Nicole Raventos combined for nine saves in the victory.Â
The Salukis won despite taking 13 fewer shots than the Eagles. SIU took an efficient five shots to net their two goals while Tennessee Tech needed 18 shots to score its lone goal.
Up Next: The Salukis will return to action on Tuesday, Aug. 13 when they travel to face the University of Illinois-Chicago in the second exhibition match of the preseason. Kickoff is at 6 p.m
