Salukis Overmatched Against Lipscomb
09/19/2019 | 9:15:00 | Women's Soccer
CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Lipscomb Bison (6-3 overall) scored one goal in the first half and added five in the second, combined with a solid defensive effort to keep the Southern Illinois Salukis (4-5-1) at bay in a 6-0 victory on Thursday night.
The Bison didn't waste much time before getting on the board, as their first goal came in the ninth minute by way of Allie Dunn, her first of the year. The Salukis had a few great looks in the first half, as the team recorded three shots with two coming on goal but couldn't manage to get on the board before going into the half trailing 1-0.
The second half saw the Bison score their second goal in the 52nd minute by way of Olivia Doak, her sixth of the season. Dunn scored twice more, once in the 57th minute and again in the 65th minute to record a hat trick. Lipscomb's final two goals came at the 72nd and 77th minutes, effectively ending the match with a 6-0 victory.
The Salukis managed to get an efficient six shots on goal in nine attempts but failed to score a goal for only the fourth game this season.

On the team's overall performance
We needed a measuring stick. For a team like Lipscomb, if we need to know where we are, that's a great matchup to have. I thought that both their goal in the first half and the first in the second half came actually a little bit against the run of play. If you make a mistake with a team like that, they will punish you. If you just look at their shots on goal, they had 11 on goal and six went in. There is a standard of execution that they have that we just aren't there yet. This was a great learning experience for our kids.
On his message to the team
If you feel like you made a mistake, good. You should carry that, and you shouldn't be able to push those things off. Beating yourself up for it now isn't going to help us because we need to get on an airplane tomorrow, we need to train and be ready to play on Sunday. It's really not being satisfied with this result, but it's also recognizing that there were some individual mistakes that caused goals, but I think when we look at the first fifteen minutes of the first half and maybe the first 20 of the second, there were some great things we can build on. The lack of consistency and fitness – when you look at how some of their players played the same number of minutes as some of ours and those players just looked fresher. We just need time to get better at that. Teams that have pace in the back with our fast kids out is not a problem that we won't address. We just need time to get healthy. In the grand scheme of things, my message was positive.
On what to expect versus Colorado College
They're going to be a lot like Lipscomb is. Going to play on the road and in altitude against a good team at home is going to make us rise to the occasion. I hope that those players are going to recognize that. It's all about how we are better than tonight. If you made a mistake tonight and are given that same scenario on Sunday, do something different. The ability to just continue to move forward even though things aren't going your way will be big.
Up Next: The Salukis will look to rebound on Sunday when they travel to face the Colorado College Tigers (4-1) at 2 p.m. (CT).
