
Salukis Finish 7th at Redbird Invitational

The Southern Illinois University women's golf team opened their 2019-20 season this week finishing 7th of 17 at the Redbird Invitational in Normal, IL. Xavier (+21) was the winner after being positioned in second heading into Monday's final round. Bradley (+24) was runner-up, followed by Eastern Kentucky and Ball State tied for 3rd (+28).
The Salukis ended Sunday's rounds of competition in fourth place after a historic second round, shooting even par as a team for the first time in program history on a par 72 course. Rewriting history has been common for this Southern Illinois women's golf team, as they are coming off a historic season.
Through three rounds, the Salukis shot 302-288-308 with a total of 898 (+34) at the Weibring Golf Course, a 6,010 yard, par 72 golf course for the tournament. Junior Moyea Russell (+8) had a great second round carding her best score, shooting a 70 (-2) and finishing the tournament tied for 15th. In her first tournament as a Saluki, freshman Ayanna Habeel (+9) carded her best score in the second round as well, shooting a 71 (-1), finishing with a total of 225. Senior Erica Kerr (+10) and junior Emilyee McGiles (+10) finished their season opener both with a total of 226. Rosemarie Bundy (+16) shot a tournament total score of 232.Â
This year's Redbird Invitational was filled with historic moments. Five of the 17 teams scored some of the lowest 54-hole scores in tournament history including Xavier's 885 team score as the second-lowest 54-hole score and Bradley's 888 team score is the third-lowest score in tournament history.
A few player's stamped their mark in history as well. NIU's Caroline Klemp's 215 tied for the fifth-lowest individual 54-hole score in tournament history and EKU's Sam Sandland's 216 is tied for the 9th-lowest individual 54-hole score in tournament history.
Following a two week break, the Salukis will travel to Burlington, IA to compete in the Spirit Hollow Invitational on September 23, 2019.
