NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Southern Illinois University track and field program wrapped up competition at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invitational by winning 11 events on Saturday at the Vanderbilt Outdoor Track facility. In all, 17 events were won by Southern Illinois competitors over the two-day meet.
"This weekend went really well," said Director of T&F/XC Rosalind Joseph. "I kind of put this meet and weekend on the radar for our team and told them that this is the time in which things should be clicking. It was really great to see people taking ownership in their preparation and competition. That's how we know we're on the right track."
A'veun Moore-Jones got the day started by winning the discus after connecting on a throw of 45.46m (149'-2"). Moore-Jones led a 1-3-7-8 Saluki finish in the event that saw Bri'Yanna Robinson place third (44.59m/146'-3"), Shauniece O'Neal place seventh (41.52m/136'-3") and Kayleigh Conlon place eighth (41.43m/135'-11").
Over at the pole vault, senior Erin Diemer won her first competition of the outdoor season with a clearance of 3.80m (12'-5.5"). Fellow senior Savannah Long took first in the 400m hurdles after clocking in at a blazing time of 1:00.68, missing her personal best mark by less than a quarter of a second.
On the men's side, Ricky Hurley took first in the men's discus with a throw of 52.39m (171'-10"). Peyton Taylor finished one spot behind Hurley in second after connecting on a season-best mark of 50.36m (165'-3").
In the high jump, Willie Rodgers placed first after finishing with a mark of 2.16m (7'-1"), tying the seventh-highest mark in program history. Freshman Willie Johnson notched a personal best in the 400-meter with a time of 46.59, earning him first place honors.
The quartet of Corey Sherrod, Jaden Johnson, Kyle Lind and Dasani Edward combined to win the 4x100m relay at a time of 41.79, the group's fastest time of the season. Sherrod would later go on to win the 100m dash with a time of 10.81, while Lind would go on to win his second 110m hurdles competition of the season at a time of 14.43.
Freshman Dawson Smith won the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 9:24.65, with sophomore Travis Hart clocking in at 9:28.57 to take second in the same event. Closing out the day was the men's 4x400m relay squad, who placed first after clocking in at 3:16.30; their fastest time of the outdoor season.
"These next few weeks, we just have to continue to keep fine tuning as we gear up for the Missouri Valley Conference Championships," Joseph added.
The Salukis will be back on the track April 23 at the Clark Wood Invitational at the University of Louisville.
