Salukis Close Out Competition at Clark Wood Open

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Southern Illinois University track and field program wrapped up competition at the Clark Wood Open by winning two individual events on Saturday. In all, five events were won by Saluki competitors over the two-day meet.
"Today was essential for our preparation," said Director of T&F/XC Rosalind Joseph. "Wet conditions give us a chance to tune our mind and body to getting ready in less than ideal conditions. It tests us in a good way."
The wet conditions couldn't stop freshman Willie Johnson from winning his third 400-meter race of the season, as the East St. Louis, Ill., native took first by clocking in at a time of 47.62, finishing just over two centiseconds (0.26) ahead of the closest competitor.
The other event-winning Saluki on the final day of the meet was Kyle Lind, who placed first in the 110-meter hurdles at a time of 14.16, which set a new career-best for the sophomore out of Charlotte, N.C., and narrowly missed the SIU top-10 list.
On the women's side, Kayla Schiera posted a personal best in the 1500-meter after clocking in at 3:36.99, placing the Sandwich, Ill., native third against a competitive field. Also setting personal bests were A'veun Moore-Jones, who finished fourth in the discus with a toss of 48.30m (158'-5") and Savannah Long, who competed in the 100-meter hurdles and set a new lifetime best in the event after finishing with a time of 14.17, placing the senior sixth.
"I thought the student-athletes handled it well and we came out with some really good performances this weekend," said Joseph. "I'm happy with our conference prep."
The Salukis will return to the track for a final time during the regular season on April 30 for the Rock Chalk Invitational, hosted by the University of Kansas. Following the meet in Kansas, the Salukis will have 13 days to prepare for the Missouri Valley Conference Championships, which will be hosted by Southern Illinois University on May 14-16.
