SAINT CHARLES, Mo. — Southern Illinois women's golf heads to the 2021 Missouri Valley Conference Championship which begins Monday at the Bogey Hills Country Club in Saint Charles, Missouri.
SIU returns to the course as defending champion, after last year's tournament wasn't held due to COVID-19. The Salukis were picked to finish runner-up behind Missouri State in the pre-championship poll of league coaches. Southern Illinois earned 87 points and had three first-place votes.
The Salukis are led by fifth-year Erica Kerr, senior Emilyee McGiles, and senior Moyea Russell. Kerr led Southern Illinois with the lowest score at four tournaments this season, including SIU's rally from 4-strokes back to win the Dan Benbow Invitational where she finished in third place. McGiles closed out the 2020-21 season with three Top-5 finishes and a 76.53 stroke average, ranked first for the Salukis. Battling through injuries, Russell played in all seven tournaments for the Salukis to close out the season with four Top-15 finishes and a stroke average of 77.21.
Sophomore Ayanna Habeel and freshman Janie Samattiyadeekul round out the lineup for SIU, in their first appearance at the MVC Championship event. Habeel, named 2020 MVC Newcomer of the Year, closed out the regular season with a 77.42 stroke average. Samattiyadeekul finished with a 78.0 average and three Top-20 finishes.
SIU is set to tee off Monday at 8:30 a.m. CT shotgun for the first round of 36-holes. The weather is forecast to be sunny, a high of 70, with 10mph eastern and southern gusts of wind. Tuesday's final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. CT (weather permitting) with staggered tee times. The 54-hole tournament champion will advance to the NCAA Regionals. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com.
