
Salukis Face UIC in Soccer Exhibition Friday

CARBONDALE, Illinois -- Southern Illinois' women's soccer program hosts Illinois-Chicago in exhibition on Friday, August 13 at 1pm at the Lew Hartzog Complex in Carbondale. The match is free and open to the public, fans are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. The exhibition is one of three preseason matches for the Salukis, as they open their 2021 campaign against Tennessee-Martin August 19 on the road.
A Look at Last Game:Â The Salukis finished their first preseason match in a 1-1 draw to Southeast Missouri State on Wednesday. Sophomore Ashlyn Henrie was the lone goal-scorer for SIU, earning the point off of a penalty kick within the fifth minute, after being fouled by a Redhawk defender. 20 players and all five freshman saw game action at Lew Hartzog.
Returning Talent: SIU sees the return of 21, losing one starter from last season. Back in front of the net is junior keeper Maddy Alaluf (1.70 GAA, 0-5-3, 35 saves, 3 SHO), who finished sixth in saves percentage (.729) and fourth in saves per game (4.38) in the MVC. Attacking the goal is junior Kaitlin DuCharme (1G, 19 SH, 9 SOG), who finished her 2020-21 campaign with a goal against Missouri State on April 7, and ranked sixth in shots (19) in the Valley. The Salukis also see the return of 2020-21 All-MVC Second Team nominee, junior forward Emma Spotak. Spotak was tabbed the honors as the first player in program history for conference post-season honors, finishing her sophomore season starting all nine matches, marking an assist, and posting a .400 shots-on-goal percentage.
Scouting UIC: The Flames finished their conference-only 2020-21 season 5-3-1, losing in the first round of the Horizon League tournament to Northern Kentucky, 0-3. Head coach David Nikolic enters his first season under the reigns at UIC, after serving nine years as associate head coach at Northwestern. The Salukis and Flames last saw each other in exhibition in 2019, with UIC overcoming SIU, 2-0 in Chicago.
Illinois-Chicago opened their 2021 preseason in a 1-2Â loss to Valley opponent, Loyola-Chicago on August 10.
2021 Season: In addition to the final exhibition match at Belmont, the Salukis open their program's third season at Tennessee-Martin on August 19. The Salukis first regular season home contest will feature Friday night lights against Missouri-Kansas City on Friday, August 27 at 7pm. Soccer opens Missouri Valley play on September 17, hosting the Missouri State Bears at Lew Hartzog.
