Women's Basketball Moves to 3-0 in MVC Play with Win Over Drake

DES MOINES, Iowa — Makenzie Silvey and Abby Brockmeyer each notched a double-double as the Southern Illinois University women's basketball team defeated the Drake Bulldogs 60-49 on Thursday night to stay undefeated in conference play. The Salukis' win was their first against Drake since Jan. 1, 2016, snapping a 12-game Bulldog winning streak in the series.
"I thought our kids did a great job with halftime adjustments," said head coach Cindy Stein. "It was a very hard-fought game. They did a great job of coming to play and figuring it out."
Silvey's 20 points pushed her career total to 1,733 points scored, moving her past Rishonda Napier for second on the all-time scoring list. The graduate guard added 12 rebounds, tying her career high.
"Our two top posts were in foul trouble, so I knew someone had to step up and rebound," said Silvey. "This is the toughest road swing by far, I think, coming to Iowa and playing in two tough places."
Brockmeyer achieved her double-double after playing just six minutes in the first half following early-game foul trouble. Brockmeyer's impact in the second half proved key, as most of her 12 points and 10 rebounds came in the latter portion of the game. This is the second time this season that two Salukis have achieved double-doubles in the same game; prior to this season, the last time this occurred was Jan. 13, 2017.
A superb defensive effort saw the Salukis hold the Bulldogs to nearly 30 points below their average. Drake entered Thursday leading the MVC with 77.9 points per game. The Bulldogs scored just 16 points in the second half; Southern scored 18 points in the fourth quarter alone.
"I thought our defense came up really big; it was a little chaotic in the first half," said Stein. "We hung in there when we had foul trouble, and had kids come off the bench and play extremely hard. We really instituted the gameplan in the second half."
"We tried to get in the passing lanes and blow up their offense," said Silvey. "We were able to force a lot of turnovers, and we knew that was something we could do to help us succeed."
Gabby Walker was second in scoring for the Salukis, putting up 17 points to go with six rebounds and five assists. Payton McCallister added five points, while Laniah Randle contributed five steals, a career high.
The Salukis are back in action Saturday at 2 p.m. in Cedar Falls, Iowa against the UNI Panthers.
