CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team nearly overcame a 19 point deficit before ultimately falling to the University of Northern Iowa Panthers by a score of 66-57 Saturday afternoon. The Panthers shot 78.6% in the first quarter, and led the Salukis 30-11 after the first 10 minutes of play.
"Our first quarter obviously shot us in the foot," said head coach Cindy Stein. "We got down 30-11, and that's just hard to overcome sometimes."
Southern would bounce back in the second quarter, outscoring the Panthers 19-8 in that frame. The Salukis would close the deficit to one point with 2:40 left in the third quarter, but were unable to tie the game or take the lead.
Leading the Salukis in scoring was Gabby Walker with 20 points scored. Walker also contributed seven rebounds. Abby Brockmeyer secured a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. This was Brockmeyer's second-straight double-double and third in her last four games. Makenzie Silvey rounded out the Saluki scoring leaders, contributing 15 points in 39 minutes played. Silvey is averaging 35.2 minutes played per game, which ranks first in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Southern won the rebounding battle 35-34 and scored 32 points in the paint in what was a very physical contest. At one point each team was assessed a technical foul after a scramble for a loose ball.
"It was very physical inside," said Stein. "You have to come ready to play here."
Southern grabbed 14 offensive boards, leading to 10 second chance points. Five of those 14 came from Walker, whose 20 points tied her career high.
Freshman Tyranny Brown made solid contributions off the bench, scoring a career-high five points, including her first career three-pointer.
The Salukis will be back in action Thursday against Illinois State for a 6 p.m. tip.
