CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team will look to move to 4-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play on Thursday at 6 p.m. in a home matchup against the Illinois State Redbirds. The Salukis' 3-1 start in Valley play is the program's best since the 2017-18 season.
Southern enters Thursday tied for second place in the MVC, while the Redbirds (9-7, 5-0) are the only remaining undefeated team in conference play. Illinois State is currently ranked first in the MVC in both field goal percentage (46.6%) and three-point percentage (36.5%). Meanwhile, the Salukis boast one of the stronger defensive squads in the Valley, ranking third in scoring defense (59.8 ppg) and in opponent three-point percentage (29%).
The Salukis will also look to continue their strong play in the post, as they currently rank second in the conference in both rebounding defense and offensive rebounding. Southern has won the rebounding battle in 10 of their 14 games this season, led by Abby Brockmeyer. Brockmeyer is the only player in the MVC currently averaging a double-double per game.
Makenzie Silvey continues to climb the SIU scoring charts, as she moved into second place all-time with her 20 point performance against Drake last week. Silvey is now just 32 points shy of breaking Cartaesha Macklin's scoring record of 1,779 points, set in 2016. The only three players in Saluki history to score 1,700 points (Macklin, Silvey, and Rishonda Napier) have all been coached by Cindy Stein.
