CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team never trailed after a 6-0 run to start the game, ultimately defeating the conference-leading Illinois State Redbirds 56-47 Thursday night at Banterra Center. The Salukis (9-6, 4-1) led for over 37 minutes in the contest, leading by as many as 16 points in the third quarter.
"We gritted it out, and that's kind of our signature," said head coach Cindy Stein. "We keep playing hard and we find ways to win."
The Salukis were led offensively by Abby Brockmeyer, who nearly had a third-straight double-double, scoring 21 points and adding nine rebounds. Brockmeyer also drew six fouls and logged over 38 minutes on the floor.
"Abby does so much: she challenges and changes shots, she's tough on the boards, she's tough down low, she took a charge late in the game that killed Illinois State's momentum," said Stein. "Those are things that a seasoned veteran does."
Makenzie Silvey's performance was also crucial for Southern. Silvey scored 15 points and added six assists and six rebounds, and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Gabby Walker impacted the game as well, scoring nine points on 4-of-5 shooting, and achieving a plus/minus of +14.
Southern held the Redbirds (9-8, 5-1) to 37.5% shooting from the field, and 25% from three. Illinois State entered the game shooting a league-best 46.6% from the field and 36.5% from beyond the arc. The Salukis' stingy defensive performance included holding reigning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week DeAnna Wilson to zero points in over 20 minutes on the floor. Wilson finished 0-for-7 from the field after averaging 21.5 points per game last week.
"Our defensive grittiness was really, really solid tonight, and it kept us in the game when we weren't hitting shots," said Stein.
Sophomore Adrianna Katcher delivered a notable performance off the bench, scoring eight points and grabbing five rebounds in over 21 minutes on the court.
"She was on the boards, she was putting in put-backs for us; it was huge," said Brockmeyer. "She played an outstanding game."
With the win, Southern improves to 5-0 in the Banterra Center this season. Missouri State is the only other Valley school still undefeated at home.
"We talk about controlling your home floor, and if you can do that, you can make a dip into this conference," said Stein. "It's not something that we just take for granted; it's huge to win in-conference in your home games, because it's so tough on the road."
"We love playing at home," said Brockmeyer. "We know in the Valley, it's hard to play on the road. Any games we can steal on the road we're thankful for, but we know we have to win at home."
The Salukis return to the Banterra Center on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip against the Bradley Braves.
