CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team never trailed in a 64-60 victory over the University of Northern Iowa Panthers on Friday night. The Salukis started the game on a 7-0 run, ultimately leading for 39 minutes and 32 seconds in the contest.
"I really thought we handled a lot of the physicality," said head coach Cindy Stein. "They're a really tough team that kept throwing different players and different defenses at us, and our kids withstood that charge."
The victory snaps a nine-game Panther winning streak in the series. Friday's game almost mirrored the two teams' Jan. 15 matchup from earlier this season, where it was the Panthers jumping out to an early lead and ultimately holding off the Salukis late.
"It definitely was a little bit of a flipped script," said Stein. "Those are the kind of games you have in the Valley; everyone knows each other so well."
Southern shot 48% from the field for the game, including 55.6% in the fourth quarter. Leading the Salukis in scoring was Makenzie Silvey with 17. Silvey shot 5-of-8 from the floor in the contest, as well as 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Abby Brockmeyer contributed 16 points while grabbing a game-high seven rebounds. Brockmeyer also stuffed a Karli Rucker three-point attempt on Northern Iowa's final possession to seal the game.
"Abby can get in a good defensive stance and cause some problems," said Stein.
Southern's defense forced UNI into 16 turnovers, leading to 21 Saluki points off of said turnovers. The Panthers were held to 5-of-27 (18.5%) shooting from beyond the arc. Northern Iowa entered the game averaging 32.4% from three.
The Salukis will next face Drake on Sunday at 2 p.m. for the SIH Blackout Cancer game. Southern won the two teams' previous matchup this season 60-49 on Jan. 13 in Des Moines.
