MOLINE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team's Hoops in the Heartland journey ended Saturday, as the Salukis fell to the Illinois State Redbirds 50-42 in a tight, defensive battle.
"You have to give a lot of credit to Illinois State," said head coach Cindy Stein. "But I'm extremely proud of our team. This group is an extremely competitive group, some great people that give us their best every day."
After finishing the first quarter down 13-6, Southern fought back to finish the first half down five points. The resurgence continued into the third quarter as a Laniah Randle bucket gave Southern its first lead of the ballgame. The second half would continue the back-and-forth pace, ultimately seeing the Redbirds icing the game with free throws in the final minutes.
Leading Southern offensively was Makenzie Silvey with 12 points, while Abby Brockmeyer also scored in double figures with 11. Southern won the rebounding battle 35-29, and held Illinois State to just three offensive boards.
The Salukis will await a birth in the Women's National Invitational Tournament, the selection process for which is Sunday night.
