CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southern Illinois University track and field program concluded its second outdoor meet of the 2022 season on Saturday at the Joey Haines Invitational, which was hosted by SEMO.
Both the men (100 points) and women (113.5 points) finished second in the team standings for the second consecutive week. Three salukis won individual events over the course of the two days, and a total of 16 Saluki student-athletes found the podium.
The men's and women's hammer throw were the lone events that took place on Friday afternoon. Elisia Lancaster placed second in the event behind Saluki Hall of Famer Deanna Price. Lancaster recorded a personal-best mark of 66.67m (218' 8") en route to winning silver. That mark ties Freya Block for fifth all-time at SIU, and ranked as the 9th best mark in the NCAA heading into the weekend. Shauniece O'Neal finished one spot behind her teammate after recording 66.47m (218' 1") in the finals. That mark registers one behind Lancaster as the 10th best mark in the NCAA.
The first Saluki points on Saturday came by way of the 4x100 Meter Relays. The squad of Miracle Berry, Olivia Garner, Jhordin Galmore, and Iaunia Pointer placed third in women's race with a time of 47.10. The men were able to bring home gold moments later with a finish in 42.14. Caleb Massiah, Jeremiah Hamilton, Corey Sherrod, and Ja'Den Johnson were the four responsible for the ten first-place points.
Omar Rodgers secured more points for the Salukis as he ran a personal best time of 48.68 to win silver in the men's 400m.
On the women's side of the field events, A'veun Moore-Jones finished second with a new PR in the discus. Her mark of 51.18m (167' 11") is good enough to be the 8th best mark in SIU history. Teammate Matisen Ingle also set a new personal best and placed third with a mark of 50.02m (164' 11"). For the second time in as many weeks, the Salukis swept the podium in the women's shot put. Moore-Jones set a new outdoor PR and won the event by recording 17.10m (56' 1.25"). That improves her 4th best mark and SIU history, and would be the 5th best mark in the NCAA as of this past week. Bri'Yanna Robinson grabbed silver with a new outdoor PR of 16.14m (52' 11.25"). Kayleigh Conlon rounded out the top-3 with a mark of 15.66m (51' 4.5").
