
Salukis Wrap Up Outdoor Regular Season, MVC Championships Up Next

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Salukis wrapped up their final week of the outdoor regular season on Saturday at the Clark Wood Invitational, which was hosted by the University of Louisville. The throwers from the Saluki women's team also closed out their weekend at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
The action got started on Friday in Louisville. Cole Targgart placed fifth in the men's discus throw with a new personal best mark of 51.21m (168' 0"). Dylan Beaird also recorded a new personal best mark in the men's hammer throw. His fifth throw of the event travelled 58.09m (190' 07") which landed him a fourth-place finish.
Iaunia Pointer won the women's 200m with a time of 23.44. That was a new personal best time and was the third best all-time finish in SIU history. Olivia Garner finished in eighth place with a time of 24.61. On the men's side of the 200m, freshman Jeremiah Hamilton finished just off the podium in fourth place with a time of 21.50. Corey Sherrod finished in seventh at 21.91.
Omar Rodgers got the second podium finish of the night for the Dawgs. His 52.21 finish in the men's 400m Hurdles earned him a bronze finish. Ethan Senti also placed third in the men's 5000m run with a new personal best time of 14:26.62.
The women's discus and shot put were the main events for the Salukis on Friday at the Drake Relays. Bri'Yanna Robinson was the top finisher for the Dawgs (7th) in the discus with a new personal best mark of 51.29m (168' 3"). That throw also landed her inside the top-10 all-time at SIU with the seventh best throw. A'veun Moore-Jones found the podium in the women's shot put with a second-place finish. Her mark of 16.84m (55' 3") came on her third heave, putting her safely into the finals and ultimately securing the silver medal spot.
On Saturday in Louisville, Iaunia Pointer became a two-time winner on the weekend when she won the women's 100m Dash with a time of 11.41 (w/ 3.1). Olivia Garner took sixth in the final with a time of 11.73. Christian Donatelli took fourth in the men's 100m final with a time of 10.58 (w/ 3.7). Corey Sherrod was the silver medalist in the men's 400m with a time of 47.71.
Kayla Schiera won the 1500m run with a time of 4:23.94. That was a new personal best time for Schiera in the 1500m and currently ranks her 2nd all-time at SIU in the event. Dawson Smith came in the third in them men's 3000m Steeplechase with a finish in 9:13.47. His time, along with the two competitors that finished above him, broke the previous stadium record.
The hammer throw was the lone event for the Salukis at the Drake Relays on Saturday. Shauniece O'Neal placed second and as the top finisher for SIU. Her fifth toss was the longest of the day for O'Neal, measuring in at 65.89m (216' 2"). Teammate Elisia Lancaster finished in third with a mark of 65.82 (215' 11"). Kaitlyn Burson reached the finals and finished eighth overall with her new personal best mark of 61.39m (201' 5").
The women's 4x100 Relay team placed second at the Clark Wood Invitational with a season best time of 45.46. The squad consisting of Miracle Berry, Olivia Garner, Jhordin Galmore, and Iaunia Pointer now hold the best time in the Valley for this outdoor season.
Up next for the Salukis will be the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa on May 13-15.
