Salukis ready for day one of MVC Championships

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University Saluki track and field program will take to the road and head to Des Moines, Iowa, to take part in the 2022 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Drake University on May 13-15.
How to Follow
Coverage of the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships will be broadcasted on ESPN3 beginning at 5:50 p.m. CT on Friday, May 13. Bringing the Hardware Home
The Saluki men are hoping to bring home an outdoor title for the first time since 2015, while the women are hoping to hoist the trophy for the first time since 2010. The Salukis women finished second in last years MVC Outdoor Championships.
MVC Pre-Championship Poll
The MVC Pre-Championship Poll was released on May 7, which tabbed the Saluki men to finish fifth. SIU tallied 45 points, finishing behind Drake (4th, 58 points), UNI (3rd, 66 points), Illinois State (2nd, 72 points), and Indiana State (1st, 78 points).
On the women's side, the Salukis were picked to finish third with 81 points. Southern trailed Illinois State (2nd, 93 points) and Indiana State (1st, 94 points).
Against the Conference
The Southern Illinois men's team will look to their senior leadership in Omar Rodgers and Corey Sherrod on the track. Omar Rodgers currently ranks in the top-three in both hurdle events. Sherrod is tied for the third best time in the Valley in the 400m dash. On the distance side, Dawson Smith has owns the third best time in the 3000m Steeplechase at 8:58.65. In the field events, Dylan Beaird holds the fifth furtherst toss of the conference outdoor season at 58.09m. Cole Targgart sits at seventh in the men's shot put. Darrione Williams will look to vie for the top Valley spot as he currently has the second-best long jump at 7.54m.
On the track, Iaunia Pointer currently sits atop the Saluki leaderboard in the 100m and 200m events. Her times of 11.41 and 23.44 currently lead the MVC. Olivia Garner also looks to make headlines at the conference meet, as she is ranked top-four in the Valley in the both events as well. Teammate Kayla Schiera currently holds the fastest 3000m steeplechase time in the Valley, which is nationally ranked at 15th in the NCAA.
The SIU women will make their mark in the field events at the upcoming championship. A'veun Moore-Jones currently holds the best mark in the Valley for the shot put, alongside teammates Bri'Yanna Robinson and Kayleigh Conlon who sit second and fourth. Robinson, Moore-Jones, and Matisen Ingle sit at third, fourth, and fifth in the discus. Shauniece O'Neal and Elisia Lancaster lead the MVC and are nationally ranked for the hammer. Emily Kern and Kaitlyn Burson follow closely behind in third and fourth.
