The Saluki women will be represented in five different events - three on the track and two in the field. On the track, Iaunia Pointer is a dual event qualifier in both the 100m and 200m dash. Pointer is coming off the MVC Championship weekend where she was a two-time winner in both events. She qualifies in the 100m with a time of 11.41 (w/3.1) and in the 200m with a time of 23.31. That 200m time was a new personal best that won her the MVC title, and it is currently the 2nd fastest time in SIU history. Kayla Schiera will make her third-straight trip to the prelim round to compete in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Schiera recently set a new PR of 9:58.24 in the event at the MVC Championships, which won her the MVC title. That was a new meet record and also broke her own SIU record, which she set earlier this year.
In the field, SIU will see the trio of A'veun Moore-Jones, Kayleigh Conlon and Bri'Yanna Robinson compete in the shot put. Qualifying in her fourth-straight prelims, Moore-Jones, the 2022 MVC indoor and outdoor shot put champion, will look to improve upon her outdoor PR of 17.10m (56' 1.25"), a mark that stands as the fourth-furthest in program history. She recently won her third-consecutive MVC Outdoor title. Meanwhile, Conlon and Robinson hold the second and third-best marks of the season for the Salukis in the event. Conlon qualifies with a mark of 16.31m (53' 6.25"), which she set as a new personal best at the MVC Outdoor Championships. Robinson's qualifying mark is 16.14m (52' 11.5"), which she set at the beginning of April.
The Salukis send four to compete in the Hammer Throw in Elisia Lancaster, Shauniece O'Neal, Emily Kern, and Kaitlyn Burson. Lancaster is the top Saluki qualifier with her personal best mark of 67.16m (220' 4"). That heave won her the MVC title and ranks as the fifth best mark in SIU history. O'Neal will be making her fourth-straight Regional and ranks just behind Lancaster with a qualifying mark of 67.04m (219' 11"). She achieved that personal best distance at the Illini Invitational in late April. Emily Kern makes her second-straight Regional with a personal best distance of 62.31m (204' 5"). Kaitlyn Burson is a first-time qualifier after throwing a new personal best mark of 61.39m (201' 5") at the Drake Relays.
On the men's side, Omar Rodgers is the second Saluki student-athlete that will do double-duty at the Regional. Rodgers makes his return to the West Regional and is a qualifier in the both the 110m Hurdles and the 400m Hurdles for 2022. He is the MVC 110m Hurdle Champion and qualifies with a time of 13.98 (w/2.5). He clocks in at 51.12 for the 400m Hurdle event.
In the field events, Darrione Williams makes his first trip to the Regional as a Saluki after qualifying for the men's long jump. His personal best distance of 7.54m (24' 9") was good enough to be the 35th best qualifying mark. In the men's high jump event, both Trevor Thompson and Dawson Plab will represent the Dawgs. Thompson is coming off his MVC title in the high jump, after clearing a new personal best height of 2.11m (6' 11"). Dawson Plab also cleared that same height, reaching a new personal best and securing silver at the MVC Outdoor Championships.
Since the two-region format began in 2010, Southern Illinois has sent a total of 235 student-athletes to compete at the preliminary meet.
