Women's Golf finishes play at Red Sky Classic

SIU looks to Saluki Invitational Oct. 10-11

The Southern Illinois Women's Golf Team wrapped up the Golfweek Red Sky Classic with their best score of the tournament, finishing the final round with a score of 303, while finishing in 19th place with a final score of 929.

After posting rounds of 310 and 316 during the first 36 holes, the Salukis stepped up during the final round. "This team has no quit. We will get better as I learn more about their swings and shot making abilities," Head Coach Cindy Bodmer said.

Pepperdine's Lion Higo took home medalist honors after shooting consecutive 67's in the second and final round to finish with a 206 (-10) and pull away from teammate Lauren Gomez who finished three shots back with a 209 (-7). The pair helped lead the Waves to a first place finish with a team score of 846 (-13), finishing 15 strokes ahead of second-place Kennesaw State, who finished with a 861 (-3).

Bodmer enjoyed the challenge of playing in the Golfweek Red Sky Golf Classic, which featured teams from all across the country. "I'm happy to finish strong on the last day with a 303. The course was a very challenging layout with very quick greens," Bodmer stated.

For the Salukis, they were led by junior Janie Samattiyadeekul who shot a 73-82-72 to finish tied for 60th place with a score of 227 (+11). Samattiyadeekul shot an even 72 Wednesday to move up eight spots in the standings from the second round.

Senior Kylee Vaughan finished tied for 81st with a 235 (+19), freshman Ella Overstreet and senior Ayanna Habeel both finished tied for 84th with a 236 (+20), and senior Secilia Ho finished tied for 96th with a 249 (+33). Overstreet carded a 73 in the final round, her best collegiate round.

What's Next

Southern Illinois is back in action October 10-11 when they host the Saluki Invitational at Dalhousie Golf Club.
