CARBONDALE, Ill. - In an overtime thriller, the Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (8-19, 3-14 MVC) suffered a 75-66 loss to Illinois State on Thursday night.
"I'm proud of my kids," head coach Kelly Bond-White said. "We lost another one this week, but it doesn't matter. They keep stepping up and they keep fighting."
It was tight for all of regulation, with the largest lead of the first 40 minutes being Illinois State's eight-point advantage. This started with a close first quarter that saw SIU out-score Illinois State, 17-16. Southern shot 42.% from the field to begin the game, while the Redbirds went 37.5%.
The Redbirds blanked the Salukis in the second quarter, holding the hosts to just six points. Southern Illinois went 2-of-15 from the field and 1-of-9 from deep in the quarter, while Illinois State went 4-of-15 in terms of field goal shooting.
At the halftime break, Illinois State led, 28-23, in a defensive battle.
At the 7:21 mark in the third quarter, the Redbirds grabbed their largest lead of the regulation period, going up by eight at 33-25. SIU climbed back after this in large part due to freshman Maddy Saracco's shooting from beyond-the-arc. Saracco drilled a three-pointer at 6:11 to make it a five-point game. After a Jaidynn Mason jumper, the Illinois State lead was cut to three.
About four minutes later, Mason connected again, tying the game at 40-40. Both teams went back and forth to end the quarter, with the Redbirds holding on to a 46-45 lead entering the fourth.
Paige Clubb got hot in the final 10 minutes, sinking a trio of three-pointers, including one at 1:15 to give the Salukis a 57-54 lead. With just 0:14 remaining, however, Illinois State's Maya Wong hit a floater to tie the game at 60-60. Mason had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but the shot was missed, sending the game to overtime.
In overtime, the Redbirds took over, out-scoring SIU, 15-6, to win by a final score of 75-66. On the game, Southern Illinois shot 37.7% from the field and 40.0% from deep, connecting on 10 three-pointers.
The Salukis were led by Mason's 19 points, followed by Saracco's career-high 12 points and four three pointers.
SIU will honor its seniors on Saturday at 2 p.m. vs. Bradley at the Banterra Center on Senior Day.
