What Coach Has to Say
"We are looking forward to competing against two more quality teams on Friday," said head coach Geoff Hanson. "The Little Rock women are probably the most improved team in the Missouri Valley Conference and will be a good test for our women in many events, and Henderson State always has top performers in Division II. This will also be another chance to race away from home and help prepare us to deal with adversity heading into championship season."
Last Time Out
Southern Illinois last competed this past Friday at the Indiana State Tri-Meet. The men's team picked up victories over UIndy and Ball State while the women's team defeated UIndy and Indiana State.
The Salukis picked up 42 podium finishes across the day's 32 events, with 18 gold medals being awarded to Southern Illinois swimmers. Olivia Herron, Alex Santiago, Celia Pulido, and Susanna Hernandez led the charge for SIU, with all four picking up four first-place finishes.
This past Wednesday, Santiago and Pulido were rewarded for the efforts on Friday, being named the Missouri Valley Conference's Men's and Women's Swimmers of the Week, respectively.
Saluki to Watch – Celia Pulido (Sr. / Backstroke & Butterfly)
Pulido was named the Women's Swimmer of the Week for the MVC after her performance at Indiana State where she won four total gold medals. Individually, Pulido took first in the women's 100-yard backstroke with her time of 54.85 and stood atop the podium again in the women's 200-yard backstroke; her 200-yard backstroke finish of 1:58.54 was over three seconds faster than the event's runner-up. In relay events, Pulido was on the first-place women's 200-yard medley team. She then concluded her day by anchoring the 400-yard free-relay "A" team, which finished first after their 3:23.87 performance.
