Swim and Dive Prepares for Trip to Chicagoland

Carbondale, Ill. – After opening the 2025-26 season last weekend at Missouri State, Southern Illinois swim and dive now prepares for a busy weekend up in Chicagoland. On Friday, they will face off with UIC before taking on Northwestern and Miami (OH) on Saturday.

Last Time Out
The Salukis opened their season last weekend with a two-day trip at Missouri State. There, the women's team came away with a 260.5-181.5 win while the men's team fell 275-171.
In terms of individual performance, freshman Lívia Munkácsi-Nagy had a fantastic collegiate debut, placing first in three of her four individual events while also swimming on the winning women's 400-yard freestyle relay team. Olivia Herron also did well for the women's squad, picking up four individual wins and one relay wins. And on the men's side, Willem Huggins had a nice season-opener, finishing first in both of his individual events while also being a part of three relay wins.
Weekly Honors
Following the Missouri State meet, three Salukis walked away with weekly honors from the Missouri Valley Conference.
Munkacsi-Nagy was named the Women's Freshman of the Week for her outstanding Saluki debut. Meanwhile, Liseska Gallegos Gutierrez was named the Women's Swimmer of the Week. The sophomore stood atop the podium in every single event she participated in. In individual events, Gallegos was first in the 200-yard backstroke and 100-yard backstroke. As for relay events, Gallegos was on the winning squad in the 400-yard medley relay, 200-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay, and 400-yard freestyle relay. This is the reigning MVC Women's Freshman of the Year's first career Swimmer of the Week award.
Finally, Alex Cimera was named the Men's Swimmer of the Week. Cimera finished the meet with 28 points, most among Saluki men and second most on the men's side of the meet. He competed in six events, taking first in all but one. Individually, the senior went gold in the men's 200-yard freestyle and two men's 100-yard freestyle events. As part of a relay team, Cimera helped win the men's 400-yard medley relay and the men's 400-yard freestyle relay. This is Cimera's first career Swimmer of the Week honor from the MVC.
The Matchup
Southern has a headstart on all three opponents this week, as this will be the first time UIC, Northwestern, and Miami (OH) see action this year.
