Salukis Host and Sweep A3 Performance Invite

CARBONDALE, Ill. – From Thursday through Saturday, Southern Illinois swim and dive hosted the A3 Performance Invite. Welcoming Bellarmine, Eastern Illinois, Evansville, and Nebraska-Omaha to Carbondale, SIU won both the men's and women's side of the meet, with the men totaling 825 points and the women scoring 943.
How it Happened
Thursday Finals
The first finals session started with a win for SIU's 200-yard freestyle relay in both the women's and men's events. Moving to individual events, Lívia Munkácsi-Nagy started things off with a win in the women's 500-freestyle before Tomáš Peciar went and won the event on the men's side.
Another SIU win came in the women's 200-yard IM courtesy of Olivia Herron, who was followed by Benedek Andor winning the men's 200-yard IM. In the women's 50-yard freestyle, Zaria Terry was less than half-a-second off from braking SIU's record in the event, and Willem Huggins put in an impressive time as well to win the men's event. Moving back to relays, both SIU squads stood atop the podium for the 400-yard medley relay.
Friday Finals
Friday kicked off with Southern's women's team claiming the gold medal in the 200-yard medley relay. Munkacsi-Nagy once again one the first individual event of the evening, this time taking first in the women's 400-yard IM. Juraj Barcot then stood on top of the podium for the first time in the invite in the men's 400-yard IM.
Terry added another gold to her total in the women's 100-yard butterfly, and Carter Ruthven snagged his first win of the weekend in the men's 100-yard butterfly. Then, Susy Hernandez added her name to the list of winners after taking the crown in the 200-yard freestyle.
Herron put in an impressive effort in the 100-yard breaststroke, with her time of 1:00.60 being good enough for first place, a NCAA "B" rating, and a pool record. Maddax Thompson also won the 100-yard breaststroke on the men's side of the meet.
Liseska Gallegos Gutierrez continued her impressive sophomore campaign by winning the women's 100-yard backstroke before Huggins closed out day two finals by winning the men's 100-yard backstroke.
Saturday Finals
The final day of the event began with the 800-yard freestyle relay, in which both SIU teams were victorious. Then came the 1650-yard freestyle, which was won by Munkacsi-Nagy and Peciar. Gallegos take home gold in the 200-yard backstroke before Barcot won the event on the men's side.
In the 100-yard freestyle, Hernandez and Andor occupied the first-place spot on their podiums. This all led up to Herron breaking another pool record while setting a NCAA "B" time in the 200-yard breaststroke with her swim of 2:09.09. Thompson also won the event for the men's team.
Tamara De la Torre earned her first win of the Invite in the 200-yard butterfly right before Ruthven added another first-place to his Invite total in the men's event for SIU's final win of the weekend.
Swimmers of the Meet
After the conclusion of the Invite, Herron and Andor were named the Women's and Men's Swimmer of the Meet.

SIU is not done with the invite circuit just yet, as they compete in the Mizzou Invite next week from Thursday, Nov. 20, through Saturday, Nov. 22.
