CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Missouri Valley Conference named its postseason award winners on Wednesday and five Southern Illinois players earned themselves an accolade. Sophia Schlicklin was named First Team All-Conference while Guliana Balistreri and Dana Nadda found their way onto the Second Team. Additionally, Olivia Anderson made the All-Conference Third-Team and Brooke Gosse was named to the All-Freshman Team.
"This season has been the most successful in Saluki Soccer history," says head coach Graeme Orr. "Every one of our 24 players and staff members worked tremendously hard to achieve our record-breaking results. I'm also thrilled that five of our players have earned individual accolades — the first time in program history that multiple Salukis have been recognized with All-Conference honors. I'm confident this is just the beginning, and more postseason awards will follow for this remarkable group."
Schlicklin headlines the group as SIU's first ever First-Team All-Conference member. The sophomore not only led this year's squad in assists (5) and points (17), but was also tied for the team lead in goals with six. Additionally, Schlicklin set the program record for assists and points while tying the record for goals. And in the MVC, Schlicklin currently sits top-five in shots-on-goal (20), goals, assists, and is third in points. This is Schlicklin's second postseason honor after she was named to the All-Freshmen squad last season.
On the All-MVC Second Team landed Balistreri. A sophomore out of San Diego, Balistreri was a stalwart for SIU defensively. She was one of two Salukis this season to play every minute of every game and totaled 1,713 minutes, a new program record. Balistreri also added an assist to her season resume.
Joining Balisteri on the All-MVC Second Team is Nadda. A transfer from Fairfield, Nadda turned into one of SIU's most reliable offensive weapons. The junior tied Schlicklin for the team lead in goals with six, a number that was tied for fourth best in the conference. She also contributed three assists for a total of 15 points, which is tied for fourth most in the MVC.
Balistreri and Nadda are the first SIU members of the All-MVC Second Team since Emma Spotak made it in 2021.
Rounding out the All-MVC members is Anderson, who earned a spot on the Third Team. Anderson was a steady force for Southern at the midfield all season, playing 1,687 minutes, the most of any non-defenders on the team. Offensively, Anderson potted one goal and dished out three assists for five total points. This is the senior's second season in a row landing on the All-MVC Third Team.
Finally, Gosse made it on the All-Freshman Team. The first-year out of St. Augustine, Florida, carved out a permanent role on SIU's defensive line, playing 1,310 minutes, the most among Southern's freshmen. For SIU, this is the second straight year they have had a player make the All-Freshman Team after Schlicklin did so last year.
Southern's record-breaking season ended this past Sunday in the MVC quarterfinals. Their final record of 10-6-3 set a new program best for single-season wins.
