Recap | SIU Brings Home Another Pair of Gold Medals on Day Two of MVC Championships

Waukee, Iowa – Day two of the Women's Missouri Valley Conference Swim and Dive Championships took place Thursday, and it was another successful day for Southern Illinois, who brought home two championships and a set of broken records. However, SIU did slip a bit in the team standings, falling to second place behind Indiana State.
How it Happened
Prelims
The day started with the 500-yard freestyle. Fernanda Sánchez finished seventh in the event to secure a spot in the night's A-finals while Ale Hoyos Horvath just made the B-finals by finishing 16th.
Next was the 200-yard IM, which featured a record-breaking performance by Olivia Herron. Her time of 1:58.63 was good enough for first-place in the event and also set a new MVC championship record. Liseska Gallegos Gutierrez was the event's runner-up to Herron to join her teammate in the A-finals. Meanwhile, Brooklyn Anderson and Tia Jankovics placed well enough to make the B-finals.
Preliminary swimming events ended with the 50-yard freestyle. Susanna Hernandez came in sixth place to book a trip to the A-finals while Masha Zhukova and Ava Rines secured B-finals spots.
There was also the prelim event for one-meter diving. Farida Moussa scored 246.50 points to grab fourth place and head to the A-finals.
Finals
Finals opened up with the 500-yard freestyle. Sanchez was the highest placing Saluki, taking eighth place with her swim of 4:56.07.
The 200-yard IM was up next, and Herron once again dominated, taking home the gold with her 1:57.85 swim. That time reset the championship record once again and was 0.64 seconds off from tying the SIU record. Behind Herron on the podium was Gallegos once more, who captured silver.
In the 50-yard freestyle finals, Hernandez finished with a time of 23.11 to place sixth.
The one-meter diving finals were next up. Moussa was once again the top SIU finisher, scoring 253.35 points to secure fifth place.
Thursday's events ended with the 400-yard medley relay. SIU's squad of Herron, Celia Pulido, Bea Padron, and Zaria Terry pulled off the event win with their time of 3:34.56, a new program, MVC, and MVC championship record.

Day three of the championships takes place tomorrow, Friday. Prelims begin at 10:30 a.m. before finals take place at 6 p.m.
