Swim and Dive Back in Action with Two Meets in Two Days, Including Senior Day

CARBONDALE, Ill. – With their winter break concluded, Southern Illinois swim and dive is back in action this weekend with a men's only meet at Purdue on Friday and a by hosting Indiana State and Evansville on Saturday for Senior Day.
"It's been a month and a half since we have had a chance to compete, and this group has put in a tremendous amount of hard work during this winter training block," says head coach Geoff Hanson. "We're excited to see the Purdue men, Indiana State women and Evansville men and women over the next two days and hopefully see some payoff for all of our hard work."

Last Time Out
The Salukis were last in action when they sent select swimmers to the Mizzou Invite from November 20-22. Olivia Herron made some serious noise at the invite, setting program records for the 400-IM and 200-breaststroke. Susy Hernandez broke a record as well, doing so in the 50-freestyle, as did Benedek Andor in the 200-IM. In addition to those three, Carter Ruthven won the 100-butterfly, and Liseska Gallegos Gutierrez, Willem Huggins, Brooklyn Anderson, and the Salukis' 400-freestyle relay team all grabbed podium spots as well.
Weekly Honors
The week following the meet, Herron and Huggins were named the MVC Women's and Men's Swimmer of the Week. Herron finished the invite with three individual wins and three new school records while siting top-25 in the nation for the 200-breaststroke and 100-breaststroke. As for Huggins, he podiumed in the 100-backstroke, 400-medley relay, 200-medley relay, and 400-freestyle relay. After the meet, Huggins sit atop the MVC leaderboard for the 100-backstroke, 200-backstroke, and 200-freestyle, while setting conference records in the 200-backstroke and 200-freestyle.
The Matchups
Purdue's men's team is coming off an appearance at the USA Diving Winter Nationals, where they had two athletes grab a gold medal in the 10-meter dive and a silver medal on a springboard. They're last team performance was a 156-104 loss at #20 Wisconsin on December 6.
As for Evansville, their men's team was last in action at SIU's A3 Invite from November 13-15, where they placed fourth of the five teams competing. The Aces' men's squad will be in action on Friday when they host UIC for their senior day. Their women's team was also last in action at Southern's A3 Invite, where they also came in fourth place. The women's squad will also be competing on Friday versus UIC.
Indiana State enters this matchup 5-1 on the year. They last competed at the Evansville Regional Sports Commission Diving Invite from December 16-17, and their last full meet was a 229-68 win over Toledo on December 6.
