
Swim and Dive Men’s Team Falls to Purdue in First Meet After Winter Break

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – For the first time since before the winter break, Southern Illinois swim and dive was in action on Friday with a men's meet at Purdue. Despite achieving a podium in nearly every event, the Salukis ended up falling to the Boilermakers, 207-103.
How it Happened
Southern Illinois started the day with a silver medal in the 400-yard medley. Their first individual podium finish came in the 200-yard IM, where Benedek Andor was the runner-up. Southern's first win of the day came courtesy of Carter Ruthven in the 100-yard butterfly.
Moving to the 200-yard breaststroke, Maddax Thompson came in second with his time of 2:00.26, and Willem Huggins rounded out the 200-yard backstroke podium. In the first diving event of the day, Oliver Mebs came in third in the 3-meter dive with a score of 336.08.
The 1650-yard freestyle featured Tomáš Peciar finishing second, and two Salukis, Alex Cimera and Rodrigo Ramos Chávez, stood atop on the 200-yard freestyle podium. Ruthven podiumed once again in the 200-yard butterfly, and Tiago Faleiros earned his first medal of the day after finishing third in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Huggins claimed another bronze medal in the 100-yard backstroke before SIU swept the 100-yard freestyle podium thanks to Cimera, Ramos, and Andor. Southern claimed first and second in the 400-yard IM with Juraj Barcot and Nate Worsham for their final individual medals, and the day closed with Southern's 200-yard freestyle relay team placing third.

SIU is right back at it tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 10, with a home meet against Evansville and Indiana State's women's only team. It is also Senior Day for the Salukis. The meet begins at 1 p.m. while the Senior Day ceremony begins around 12:40 p.m.
