Senior Nao Katamoto scored the game's only goal in the first half, finishing a pass from Dana Nadda in the ninth minute to give the Salukis an early lead. The goal marked Katamoto's fourth of the season, while Nadda recorded her fourth assist.
The Salukis controlled much of the attacking action early, pressed the Redbirds' defense, and earned five corner kicks in the first half. The Salukis recorded seven shots before halftime while holding Illinois State to two attempts.
The second half remained physical, with both teams continuing to battle for possession. Illinois State picked up two yellow cards, but both sides kept pushing until the final whistle as the Redbirds tried to tie.
Southern kept Illinois State off the scoreboard for the rest of the game to secure the win. The Salukis finished with a 10-7 advantage in shots and a 6-1 lead in shots on goal. Kaylynn Miller added one save to help the Salukis earn the shutout.
The victory keeps Southern Illinois unbeaten in Missouri Valley Conference play at 4-0 and extends its winning streak to nine consecutive matches.
