MUNCIE, IN. - The Salukis improve their record to 2-5 on the season as they defeated the Penguins of Youngstown State Saturday afternoon.
The Dawgs started the day off by winning the doubles point with junior Maria Blanco and senior Tana Trapani teaming up to knock off Youngstown's Najbert and Fuleley (8-5)at the No. 1 spot, while juniors Zuzana Palovic and Zoya Honarmand were able to notch a win at the No. 2 doubles spot over Peretti and Hagood (8-5).
In singles play Blanco led the Dawgs as she beat Karen Najbert 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (2)at the No. 1 singles spot. Southern picked up wins in all but two singles matches, as SIU coasted to the 5-2 victory.
Coach Brett Bridal was very pleased with his team's performance on the weekend and says the team is making more progress every match. "This weekend was the best tennis we have played as a collective group so far this season. Whether the outcome in any individual singles match was a win or loss, everyone not only competed well, but displayed good decision making, poise, and shot-making capabilities. We are making progress in becoming better tennis players each and every day."
The Salukis will next travel to Paducah, Ky. for two matches beginning with a showdown with Murray State on March 4 and finishing with a match against Miami of Ohio on Sat., March 5.
