Women's tennis gets first conference win

PERORIA, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's tennis team came away from Bradley with their first conference win. It took over five hours for the Salukis to get the 4-3 win, but it was worth the wait.
Bradley won all three of the doubles matches to earn the doubles point. In the number one match Zuzana Palovic and Maria Blanco lost to Ashley Morris and Elise Montrose 8-3. The second match went into a tie breaker set, but the Braves won 8-7 (7-2) over Zoya Honarmand and Amanda Taillefer. In the third match Jess Sampias and Erin Krubeck defeated Kathleen Maher and Laura Bredniak 8-2 to take to 1-0 lead over SIU.
The first singles game completed was the number six match with Maher and Sampias. The Braves took the 6-0, 6-0 win over Maher and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Taillefer won the number four match over Kim Braun 6-3, 6-1 to give the Salukis their first win of the day.
The number three match finished next as Teri Chan defeated Honarmand 6-2, 6-1, giving the Braves a 3-1 lead over the Salukis.
Blanco defeated Morris in the number one match 6-1, 6-2. At the two spot Palovic beat Montrose 6-4, 6-4, tying the match at 3-3.
Bredniak's match with Krubeck lasted four and a half hours as each set had a tie breaker.
"Every point I had to work for," Bredniak said. "I was happy to come away with the win."
Bredniak won the marathon match 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (15-13), and clinched the 4-3 win for the Salukis.
"It feels good to get our first conference win," said Bredniak. "We worked really hard and came out ready. We really wanted to win. It makes us feel better and is a confidence booster going into the tournament."
With the win, the Salukis will go into the MVC Tournament Friday with a 4-14 overall record and a 1-8 record in conference.
