CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Saluki women's tennis team turned in a dominating performance in both singles and doubles Saturday at the Sports Blast Sports Complex, this time downing Tennessee Tech, 6-1.
Freshman Melanie Delsart continued her superb play, tormenting TTU's Leydi Zora en route to a 6-1, 6-1 victory in top singles.
"Melanie Delsart especially had a great day, with her singles win," said SIU head coach AAudra Nothwehr. "She carried out her game plan to a `T' and was able to set up many winners."
Fellow freshman Jennifer Dien also turned in an equally noteworthy performance. Dien, a native of Overland Park, Kan., defeated junior Frederike Kahl 6-0, 6-3, in No. 5 singles.
Jessica Flannery notched her first win of the season by downing Katie Barnhill in No. 6 singles, 6-3, 2-6, 10-3. The senior has now played in three matches that went three sets or ended in tiebreakers.
Southern began the day by capturing the doubles point with wins in two of three matches. Delsart and senior Martina Vianna Ce downed TTU's duo of Barnhill and Zora in the No. 2 doubles, 8-5, while Flannery and Dien cruised past Diana Woodcock and Laura Porras, 8-4, in third doubles.
"TTU is a very consistent team, so we had to be patient and work the point against them," Nothwehr said. "Our top doubles were a little off today - which was unfortunate - but I think overall we were very focused and did what we had to do."
The Dawgs will next be in action on Friday, when they travel to Clarksville, Tenn., to face the Austin Peay Lady Govs. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m. at the Governors Tennis Center.
