CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The Saluki women's tennis team closed out February on a down note, falling to Austin Peay, 4-3, Friday at the Governors Tennis Center in Clarksville, Tenn.
The SIU doubles squads provided the Dawgs with an early 1-0 lead. Melanie Delsart and Martina Vianna Ce topped the Lady Govs' Carolin Weikand and Michelle Liew in second doubles by a narrow 8-6 margin. Meanwhile, No. 3 doubles saw Jessica Flannery and Jennifer Dien push past APSU's Demi Georgakopoulos and Yuki Nakamura, 8-5.
SIU captured the doubles point for the third straight match and the fourth time in the last five matches.
Yet, the Salukis were unable to carry that momentum into singles, as the Lady Govs captured four of the six singles matches on the day.
Recording one of the two Southern singles wins was Vishakha Sheoran in No. 2 singles. The sophomore from New Delhi, India, wrestled a marathon match from APSU's Weikand 7-6, 2-6, 7-6. The match featured two tiebreakers, including a 16-14 tiebreak in the first set.
Vianna Ce notched the other win, beating Yuki Nakamura by default in sixth singles.
"We were kind of flat today, but our veterans pulled out our two singles wins," said SIU head coach Audra Nothwehr. "Most of the matches were really close and we had some really long tiebreakers. Doubles is holding up for us, but we just came out flat."
The Salukis return to the courts Tuesday when they take on the Murray State Racers. The match will begin at 2 p.m. at either the University Courts or the Sports Blast Sports Complex, weather pending.
