CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Salukis' lower singles players dominated play for the second straight match, allowing Southern to come away with a 5-2 win over Morehead State Friday.
Turning in the most impressive performance was senior Jessica Flannery, who only lost one game the entire match en route to a 6-1, 6-0 thrashing of MSU's Brooke Helms in No. 6 singles.
Emily Whitney and Jennifer Dien both emerged with convincing victories in No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Whitney handled Madeleinne Antero in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Meanwhile, Dien make quick work of Kayla Tuscany 6-3, 6-1.
Melanie Delsart and Martina Vianna Ce notched the other singles wins for SIU. Delsart topped Alexandra Rydberg 6-4, 6-1, in top singles, while Vianna Ce fought off Lauren Delaney 7-5, 6-1.
The match did not begin on a promising note for the Dawgs, as they dropped their first doubles point since January. The No. 2 pair of Delsart and Vianna Ce captured the only win, downing Morehead's Helms and Rydberg, 8-5.
"We have been really focusing on singles this past week in practice and that's probably why singles was a lot better than doubles today," said Saluki head coach Audra Nothwehr. "I was very proud of how our team adjusted to the outdoor courts, being our first practice or match outdoors."
The women will hit the courts again Saturday morning to face the Cougars of Chicago State. The match is slated to take place at 10 a.m. at the University Courts in Carbondale.
