NORMAL, Ill. - The Saluki women's tennis team's six match win streak came to an end Sunday in Normal, Ill., as Illinois State ousted Southern Illinois, 5-2.
Despite winning the doubles point, the Dawgs lost for the first time since March 10.
"This was a crazy match," said Southern head coach Audra Nothwehr. "The wind was horrific and we had a few players that had real difficulty with it. The match easily could have gone either way."
Recording the lone win in singles for the Salukis was Emily Whitney in No. 2 singles. Whitney defeated ISU's Franziska Steinhardt in straight sets 6-5, 6-2. The win now puts the sophomore at 4-0 at that position since taking over for the injured Vishakha Sheoran on March 24.
Southern captured the doubles point in their fifth straight match with an incredible showing from Jennifer Dien and Jessica Flannery in second doubles. Down 7-5 late in the match, the duo fought off three match points to come back and beat Natalia Lech and Arianne Maack, 9-7.
In the other doubles win, Melanie Delsart and Martina Vianna Ce extended their win streak to five matches, downing the Redbirds' Julia Zubkova and Steinhardt, 8-6.
"I am proud of how we fought today," Nothwehr said. "On another day, it will be there."
The Salukis return home Wednesday for a 3 p.m. match at the University Courts against the Saint Louis Billikens.
