SIU extends win streak with a 7-0 sweep over Missouri State

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Saluki women's tennis team kept its win streak alive on Friday as SIU swept Missouri State, 7-0. With this 12th straight win, SIU is 13-6 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
SIU started with strong performances in doubles, with wins at all three positions to earn the first point.
Continuing with momentum from doubles, the Salukis continued their sweep, topping their Missouri State opponents in each singles match. Meagan Monaghan came away with the first singles win at the No. 2 spot. Senior Natasha Tomishima followed with a win at the No. 1 spot, after a tough 7-5 win in the first set.
After sitting out last week due to injury, freshman Yana Golovkina returned to the court, coming away with a three-set victory at the No. 3 spot. Athena Chrysanthou, Vitoria Beirao and Gisela Cairo Baza earned wins at the No. 4, 5 and 6 spots, respectively, sealing the win for the Salukis.
"Pretty solid efforts from everyone today," head coach Audra Anderson said. "It was great to get Yana back in action today after her week off."
SIU continues conference play tomorrow against Wichita State, one of the top teams in MVC. The Shockers are ranked 27th in the country and have won six straight MVC Team Championship titles.
"We need to come out refreshed and focused tomorrow if we want to beat a tough Wichita State," Anderson said.
Match time is set for 11 a.m. at University Courts. Saturday's match is Fan Appreciation Day, with free pizzas provided for all fans following doubles play.
