CARBONDALE, Ill. - For the first time in almost two months, the Saluki women's tennis team lost a match, falling 7-0 to No. 27 ranked Wichita State. Saturday's loss snapped SIU's 12-match win streak - the longest in Saluki history. SIU moves to 13-7 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.
The Shockers swept SIU in doubles play, despite a hard-fought match at the No. 2 spot by Polina Dozortseva and Vitoria Beirao who fell 8-5.
Senior Natasha Tomishima, who has dealt with various minor injuries throughout the season, left the match following doubles play due to injury, forcing each of the Salukis to move up a position in singles.
Meagan Monaghan opened her match at the No. 1 spot with a 6-4 win in the first set, but struggled to close out the match, falling in the next two sets. Athena Chrysanthou put up a fight at the No. 3 spot as well, falling in the first set but going point for point in the second before falling 7-5 to close out the match. Each of the Salukis, however, fell in their singles matches.
"I am proud of how we stayed mentally tough and made it battle," head coach Audra Anderson said. "They were very tough, but we're still plugging away."
SIU is set to play its final away matches of the regular season next weekend as the Salukis travel to Iowa to take on Drake and Northern Iowa.
