CARBONDALE, Ill. – Six Salukis scored in double figures as the Southern Illinois women's basketball team blew past Brescia University, 104-35, Saturday afternoon at the SIU Arena.
It was a total team effort for the Salukis, as all 11 in uniform played at least 11 minutes and everyone scored at least a basket. The freshmen class did most of the damage, as five freshmen combined to score over half (56) of SIU's school record 104 points with the newcomers playing 119 of the 200 total minutes.
"We know we need to get our younger kids more reps," said fourth-year head coach Cindy Stein. "We just really haven't had any cushion in any games to do that. This was a good game for us to get them out there and work on some things that we need to work on and reemphasize some things while also trying to get them in game shape."
Freshman Nicole Martin made the most of her increased playing time against the Bearcats, as she notched her first career double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
"It was a good experience," said Martin. "I like finally getting out there and getting in my rhythm."
Redshirt freshman Tiajaney Hawkins made her first career start and filled the stat sheet, scoring 12 points to go along with eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.
The East Chicago, Ind. native set new career-bests in all five categories in her tenth career game, helping the Salukis distribute the basketball to the tune of 29 assists, which was one off the school record of 30, set on Jan. 8, 1990 against Western Illinois.
"We were trying to see the floor, see who's open and see who's trying to get to the gaps, basically passing to the open spots," Hawkins said.
The Bearcats (1-8) did their best, but with just two players on the roster taller than 5-foot-10, the Salukis were able to exploit mismatches all game and find open shots. Southern only turned the ball over six times and shot 49.3% (37-of-75) from the floor, with assists coming on 29 of those 37 baskets.
I feel like we have really good passers on our team and you could see that," Stein said. "Kristen Nelson had a couple of passes that were excellent. Brittney Patrick the same thing. Olivia Bowling is a good passer too. That's something we've recruited and its only going to get better and better the more time they play together."
Nelson had 13 points, five assists, three steals and three boards, while Patrick added eight points, five rebounds, four assists and just one turnover. Bowling chipped in a three-ball and a pair of assists in 14 minutes off the bench.
Sophomore Ashley Hummel scored 10 points, grabbed seven rebounds and tallied a steal and a block and was one of six underclassmen to notch career-bests in points.
Seniors Carlie Corrigan and Rishonda Napier chipped in 12 and 11 points respectively to round out the scorers in double figures.
The Salukis return to action Tuesday, Nov. 29 when they travel to UT Martin to take on the Skyhawks, who have won three-straight Ohio Valley Conference regular season titles. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
