Salukis Sweep Valley Weekly Honors
Last week, Kylie Giebelhausen was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week while freshman forward Lauren Hartman earned MVC Newcomer of the Week honors.
It marks the third time SIU has swept the MVC weekly awards since the Valley began honoring a Newcomer of the Week prior to the 2003-04 season, and the first time the Salukis have done so since the 2011-12 season.
Hartman is the first Saluki to earn Newcomer of the Week honors since her teammate, Rishonda Napier, won it for the week of January 28, 2013. The Tremont, Ill. native averaged 14 rebounds per game in SIU's 2-0 week, as she snagged 12 boards to go along with five points and a pair of steals in 27 minutes during SIU's win over Murray State on Thursday. She added 16 rebounds, including 10 in the first half to go along with four points, three blocks and a steal in SIU's win at Purdue.
Career Scoring Record
SIU's career scoring record may once again be in jeopardy. Cartaesha Macklin broke the school record last season, and Rishonda Napier may pass her during the 2016-17 season. Napier is in eighth on SIU's career scoring list, needing 412 points in her final season wearing the maroon and white to pass her former teammate for tops on the all-time list.
Shoot the Jay!
Head coach Cindy Stein has shown a willingness to give her open shooters the green light to try from the outside, with the Salukis taking 21 first-half three-pointers in the season opener at Oklahoma. That's the most in a first half since at least 2000. SIU, which set school records in three-pointers made and three-pointers attempted in a single season last year, attempted 30 three-pointers in the loss at No. 16 Oklahoma. That marked the most three-pointers attempted in a game since Dec. 12, 2015.
