Giebelhausen ties the school record for three-pointers in a game, while Napier and Nebo record double-doubles in the win.
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Kylie Giebelhausen tied the school record for three-pointers in a game and Rishonda Napier notched her second double-double of the season to lead the Southern Illinois women's basketball team (8-8, 2-3 MVC) past Wichita State (5-10, 0-4 MVC), 77-54, Friday evening at SIU Arena.
Giebelhausen finished with 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting from three-point range, and the East Peoria, Ill. native became the sixth Saluki to make seven in a single game. She also added five rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
"I had a rough time last weekend, so I really wanted to make up for it," Giebelhausen said. "My shot has been on in practice this week, so I was hoping it would stay that way for the game. Those first two I made really gave me confidence."
The junior guard missed her first attempt from behind the arc, but then rattled in six-straight without a miss.
"I'm glad to see Kylie get her stroke back," SIU head coach Cindy Stein said. "Kylie is a great shooter and I felt like she's been missing that piece- that smoothness."
Napier assisted on four of Giebelhausen's seven treys, and finished with 18 points and 11 assists. It marks the second double-double of the season for the redshirt senior point guard, and the third double-double of her career.
Wichita State did all it could defensively to try and pressure Napier into making mistakes, but the Burbank, Calif. native was unfazed; she turned the ball over just twice and set a new career-best with a +9 assist-to-turnover ratio.
"I was really excited for Rishonda's 18 points and 11 assists," Stein said. "I think that's a great game, especially for a point guard that is being pressed and trapped the entire game."
Napier shot 6-of-10 from the floor, which included 5-of-8 from downtown. She and Giebelhausen combined for 12 of Southern's season-high 13 three-pointers.
Kim Nebo notched her seventh career double-double, as she scored 16 points and grabbed 10 boards. Southern is now 7-0 when the Katy, Texas native records a double-double.
Nebo was also responsible for helping the Salukis neutralize Wichita State's Rangie Bessard, who came into Friday's contest averaging 16 points and seven rebounds in two previous career meetings against SIU. The University of Minnesota transfer still scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, but Southern's zone defense forced the 2016 MVC Newcomer of the Year to turn the ball over a game-high six times.
"Our zone has been a very good defense for us this year," Stein said. "Our kids did exactly what we wanted them to do."
The Salukis will try to make it back-to-back wins Sunday, Jan. 15 when they host the Missouri State Lady Bears. Tipoff is set 2 p.m., and will feature the St. Louis Cardinals caravan, with several Cardinals making appearances and signing autographs. Tickets for the contest are just $2 and can be purchased here or by calling 1-877-SALUKIS.
