Napier moves into second on SIU's all-time scoring list in loss.
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Missouri State rode a balanced offensive attack to a 78-60 victory over Southern Illinois Sunday evening at SIU Arena. Led by Liza Fruendt's 22 points, the Lady Bears (7-9, 3-2 MVC) placed three scorers in double figures and forced 19 Saluki turnovers.
Rishonda Napier matched Fruendt for game-high scoring honors, as she totaled 22 points to go along with four assists, two rebounds and two steals. Kylie Giebelhausen scored in double-figures for the third-straight game, as she had 13 points and seven boards, while Nicole Martin finished with six points and eight rebounds, marking the fourth time in five games that the Jefferson City, Mo. native has led the Salukis in rebounding.
There were moments that the Salukis (8-9, 2-4 MVC) looked every bit the dangerous young team that could pose a threat come Missouri Valley Conference Tournament time. And then there were stretches that Southern seemed like a youthful squad still trying to figure out who it is 17 games into the season.
"With our team we will have moments of brilliance and moments of devastation," said fourth-year head coach Cindy Stein. "With a young team, that's kind of what you go through until they get it."
The two sides traded baskets through the early going, with a layup by Napier tying the score, 7-7 with 6:58 remaining in the first quarter. The Lady Bears seized control of the contest with a 14-2 run over the next 6:04, a stretch in which Southern shot just 1-of-12 from the field, missed all five attempts from three-point range and turned the ball over three times.
"We talked about the fact that we wanted to take good shots and have good execution, and the first few offensive sets we didn't run a set," said Stein. "We were just running around and people were firing stuff up."
The offensive miscues continued for the Salukis at the onset of the second quarter, as back-to-back turnovers and misses on their first three attempts allowed Missouri State to build a 19-point advantage that it never relinquished.
SIU shot just 16.7% (2-of-12) from three-point range in the opening half, as Southern was unable to get the 3-ball to drop like it did in the win over Wichita State on Friday. The Salukis did fare better in the second half, as they made 8-of-18 (44.4%), but the damage had already been done.
With her 22 points Sunday, Napier is now second on SIU's all-time scoring list. She passed Amy Rakers with her first basket of the second quarter, as the redshirt senior point guard needed just nine points coming into Sunday's matchup to surpass Rakers. She is now 228 points shy of Cartaesha Macklin's school record of 1,779 career points.
Up next, the Salukis travel to Evansville, Ind. on Sunday, Jan. 22 for a 1 p.m. CST match-up with the Purple Aces.
