BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Southern Illinois women's basketball team picked up its second-straight win Sunday afternoon, as the Salukis held on to defeat the Illinois State Redbirds, 63-56 at Redbird Arena.
The Salukis (10-10, 4-5 MVC) were led by their 'Big Three', as Rishonda Napier, Kylie Giebelhausen and Kim Nebo combined for 51 of Southern's 63 points.
Napier finished with a game-high 20 points and added three rebounds, three steals and three assists while Giebelhausen added 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Nebo notched her seventh career double-double, as she tallied 13 points and tied her career-best with 15 rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive glass. Southern improved to 7-0 all-time when the Katy, Texas native records a double-double.
Southern's 'Big Three' outscored the Redbirds, 29-to-20 in the first half, and the Salukis cruised to a 35-20 halftime lead. SIU's defense was stifling during the first two quarters, as Southern turned 12 turnovers into 14 points.
"I was really pleased with our first half," fourth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "We were hitting on all cylinders and doing some really good things."
Illinois State (5-15, 2-7 MVC), however, did not go quietly into the good night, as they battled back from down 16 to tie the game with 5:40 remaining in the contest. The Salukis got timely baskets down the stretch to seal the victory.
"As I told our team, sometimes you have to learn from these grind out games," Stein said. "I'm glad we learned with a win versus a loss."
Napier gave Southern its largest lead of the contest, 35-19 on a 3-ball with 1:06 to go in the second quarter. Illinois State got going in the third quarter, as they opened the frame on a 9-1 run and outscored SIU, 22-14 to get to within seven (49-42).
The Redbirds ripped off seven-straight points to open the fourth quarter, with a jumper by Megan Talbot knotting the score, 49-49 with 8:18 to play. Napier answered, as the two-time All-MVC selection sank a pair of free throws and made a deep three-pointer to give SIU a 57-52 lead with 2:23 remaining.
The Redbirds worked the ball inside on its next two possessions, as Millie Stevens made back-to-back layups to get ISU to within one with 1:30 to go. The Salukis looked to the low-post for an answer, and Nicole Martin provided one. She got a tough shot to fall from along the baseline and drew a foul in the process.
Martin missed her ensuing free throw, but Giebelhausen corralled the offensive rebound to give Southern a fresh shot clock. Illinois State fouled, and both Naper and Giebelhausen sank a pair of freebies to seal the win.
The Salukis return to action on Feb. 3, when they host the first-place Drake Bulldogs. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
