Big fourth quarter lifts Drake past SIU
CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois women's basketball team had the first-place Drake Bulldogs on the ropes for three quarters, but a big fourth quarter Friday night allowed the Bulldogs to remain unscathed in conference play.
With the win, the Bulldogs extend their winning streak to 11 games, and improve to 17-4, and 10-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play while the Salukis fall to 10-11, and 4-6 in conference action.
The Salukis took a four-point lead at the end of the first half on a buzzer-beating three by freshman Kristen Nelson. The Bulldogs opened the third with a 5-0 spurt, and the two teams were tied, 50-50, at the end of the three quarters. Drake's offense,
which came into the contest averaging 83.4 points per game, took advantage of SIU's defensive lapses down the stretch to seal the win.
"For 32-34 minutes we played as hard as we could," fourth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "We didn't do everything right. But we were playing hard and trying to do everything we could. But then we had a complete meltdown."
With the score tied 50-50, the Bulldogs got out and running, as they opened the fourth with five-straight points and built a double-digit lead after five and half minutes of play. The visitors continued to pour it on, as they outscored Southern, 21-10 in the fourth, with five of SIU's 10 points coming with less than a minute remaining in the contest.
"We were outstanding and courageous and persistent for about 32 minutes and then it all kind of fell apart," Rishonda Napier said. "It was a good learning experience because now we know what we need to do to compete with the best of the best."
Napier finished with a team-best 18 points on 50% (7-of-14) shooting from the floor, to go along with three assists and four rebounds. Senior Kim Nebo tallied her eighth career double-double, as she finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Nicole Martin scored in double figures for the third time in her young career, as she tallied 11 points, five rebounds and two blocks.
Nelson played over 20 minutes off the bench for the third-straight game, and totaled eight points, three assists, two blocks, two steals and two rebounds, while Kylie Giebelhausen got halfway to a triple-double, as she chipped in five points, five rebounds and five assists.
