SIU will try to win back-to-back games in Des Moines, Iowa for the first time since 1986-87. Southern defeated the Bulldogs, 70-68 at Drake , when the then 16th-ranked Salukis defeated the Bulldogs, 72-45 at Drake on Jan. 31, 1987 after beating Drake, 70-68 in Des Moines the year before.
Current Salukis vs. the Bulldogs
Rishonda Napier comes into Sunday's contest averaging 17.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game in six career meetings against the Bulldogs. In SIU's 81-76 win over Drake on Feb. 6, 2015, the Burbank, Calif. native scored 30 points to help Southern break a four-game losing streak to the Bulldogs. The Preseason All-MVC selection has scored 30-plus points three times in her career, including a career-high 33 points in SIU's postseason appearance against Western Illinois a year ago. Kylie Giebelhausen has scored in double-figures in three of her four career appearances against Drake, including 10 points and five boards in last season's win in the Knapp Center. Kim Nebo also snagged 15 rebounds in that win.
Scouting the Bulldogs
The Bulldogs are tied atop the MVC standings with a 10-4 record, and are off to a 3-0 start in conference play. Drake has won four-straight, and seven of its last eight games, and are a perfect 5-0 at the Knapp Center this season. MVC Preseason Player of the Year Lizzy Wendell has led the Bulldogs in scoring in 11 of 14 games this season, including three-straight, and leads the conference, and is seventh in the nation, in scoring at 22.2 points per game. Wendall leads a potent Drake offense that is averaging 82.9 points per game, the most in the MVC and the ninth-most in the nation. Point guard Caitlin Ingle is averaging 8.5 assists per game, the second-most in the nation.
One of just five in school history
Rishonda Napier became the fifth Saluki all-time to amass 1,500 career points against the UNI Panthers on Friday. She joins Cartaesha Macklin (2011-16), Amy Rakers (1987-91), Char Warring (1980-84), and Sue Faber (1979-93) in that exclusive club. She has 1,500 points exactly, and is one of 26 active D1 players with 1,500-plus career points.
Eight points from Fourth
Napier can pass Sue Faber for fourth on SIU's all-time scoring list with eight points against the Bulldogs. The redshirt senior guard needs 31 points to pass Char Warring (1980-84) for third, and 39 points to pass Amy Rakers (1987-91) for second all-time.
Moving into Seventh
Napier dished out her 356th career assist against the Panthers on Friday, breaking her tie with Molly McDowell for seventh-most in school history. The Preseason All-MVC selection needs five assists to pass current Carbondale Community High School women's basketball coach Marialice Jenkins (360) for sixth on SIU's all-time list. Napier has notched 5-plus assists in seven games this season, including a career-high 11 in SIU's win over Memphis on Dec. 11.
