SIU has now won four-straight over Illinois State.
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Kylie Giebelhausen and Rishonda Napier each scored in double figures to lead the Southern Illinois Salukis to a 57-48 win over the Illinois State Redbirds Friday night at the SIU Arena.
Giebelhausen led the way with 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc while Napier added 13 points, a season-high four steals and zero turnovers despite near constant defensive pressure via the Redbirds' trap.
"I felt like Kylie Giebelhausen was sharp tonight," fourth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "Rishonda did everything she could to lead us, she was getting trapped a lot and we didn't always have great help."
Freshman Nicole Martin chipped in eight points and nine rebounds, while Kim Nebo had seven points, seven rebounds and two steals. Carlie Corrigan got the start and added six points and four assists in 25 minutes.
The Salukis trailed for just :19 seconds in the win, their fourth-straight over the Redbirds. Illinois State took its first, and only lead, with :24 seconds remaining in the first quarter, as it used an 8-0 run to turn a seven-point deficit into a one-point advantage. Napier answered in the form of a 3-ball with five ticks remaining in the first stanza to give Southern back a lead it never relinquished.
"There were some really good moments, but there was a lot of ugly in between," Stein said. "Sometimes, this time of year, that's what you have to do to win and we did it."
With the win, the Salukis kept pace in the middle of the Missouri Valley Conference standings. Southern currently sits in fifth place following its win over Illinois State, and is one game back of Wichita State for fourth. The Salukis hold the tiebreaker over the Shockers after sweeping the season series for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
Indiana State, who came into Friday tied with SIU for the fifth seed, lost to Missouri State, 73-63, while Bradley, who comes to the Arena on Sunday, fell 73-71 to Evansville. The Salukis are now a game ahead of both teams with three to play.
SIU forced 19 Illinois State turnovers and came away with 12 steals, both of which are season-bests against a DI opponent.
The Salukis conclude the home portion of their 2016-17 schedule on Sunday against the Bradley Braves. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and Southern will honor its three seniors, Corrigan, Napier and Nebo, following the game.
