CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois women's basketball team celebrated senior day with a 69-63 win over the Bradley Braves Sunday afternoon inside SIU Arena.
The Salukis (14-13, 8-8 MVC) were led by their three seniors, Carlie Corrigan, Kim Nebo and Rishonda Napier. All three scored in double-figures as Corrigan finished with 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, while Nebo notched her 11th career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Napier added 10 points and dished out seven assists.
"I felt like our seniors were ready to play, honestly," fourth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "They really helped lead the way, they secured things along the way, and it was pretty much great leadership by them that pulled us through."
Much like the win over Illinois State Friday night, the Salukis trailed only briefly in the contest. Bradley took its only lead, a 12-10 advantage with 5:28 to play in the first quarter, but Southern responded with an 8-0 run keyed by back-to-back baskets by Kylie Giebelhausen.
The Salukis led by as many as 16, but Bradley did its best to play spoiler, getting to within six on three occasions in the second half and cutting the deficit to three with :44 to play. But each time it was a Saluki senior who dashed Bradley's hopes of a comeback.
After the Braves got to within six, 45-39, with 6:31 to play in the third, it was Nebo's layup and block that allowed Southern to grow its lead back to double-digits. And later it was Napier who kept the Braves at bay, as she calmly sank a pair of free throws with :38 seconds remaining to make it a two-possession game and effectively secure the win for the Salukis.
"It was a lot of our seniors stepping up and making big plays," Stein said. "Carlie had a really good night tonight, she shot the ball well for us. She looked for her spots and was a really good vocal leader as well. Kim made key baskets in the fourth and Rishonda is always doing her thing sharing the ball, she found the right spots and handled the offense really well. I think all around our seniors stepped up."
And while the Saluki seniors combined for 39 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists, two blocks and two steals, it was Southern's bench that also drew praise from Stein.
"I think the biggest thing for us too is that we had people come off the bench, weather it was only for a minute, or eight or 15 (minutes), those kids did something that was very impactful and productive," Stein said. "We haven't had that sometimes."
Lauren Hartman finished with seven points and seven rebounds in 24 minutes, and was instrumental in staving off Bradley's last gasp attempt at a comeback. With the Braves on an 8-0 run that cut SIU's 14 point lead down to six, Hartman corralled an offensive rebound at nearly its highest point and laid it back in to halt Bradley's run.
The Salukis won the rebounding battle, 38-to-37, and finished with 30 points in the paint. SIU improved to 8-0 this season when scoring 30-plus points in the paint.
With the win, the Salukis are almost assured a top-five seed in the MVC Tournament for a third-straight season. Southern is two games ahead of Indiana State and Evansville with two to play, and needs to win one of its two remaining games to lock up a matchup with Wichita State in the quarterfinals. The Salukis swept the season series from the Shockers.
SIU is back in action on Thursday, March 2, when they travel to Terre Haute, Ind. to take on the Indiana State Sycamores. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. EST.
