CARBONDALE, ILL. - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team opens Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend against reigning champion, Wichita State. The last time these two squared off was in the conference championship match last year in Wichita, where the Salukis fell, 0-4.Â
Southern enters conference play with a 6-8 record, most recently falling to Saint Louis University (SLU), 0-4, last Wednesday. Before their match with SLU the Salukis were winner of two of their last three. The team went on the road and picked up wins over Alabama State and Arkansas State.
Last season the team went 6-1 in the conference regular season, their only loss coming at the hand of WSU late in the year. Before their loss to the Shockers, SIU was 6-0 in the valley, defeating every other team. The six consecutive wins was the best start in school history and the 6-1 record was tied for the best conference finish. It was the third time head coach Audra Anderson ended the conference schedule with only one loss.Â
When it comes to how the team has faired against teams in the conference this year you have to go back to the fall portion of the team's schedule. SIU won four MVC individual titles at the fall championships, the most of any team in the conference. It was also the most titles ever won at the fall championships in school history.Â
This spring season three Salukis are leading the charge for SIU. Ana Sofia Cordero, Xiwei Cai, and Polina Dozortseva all have at least five singles victories and at least five doubles victories.Â
QUICK SCOUT ON WSU
The Shockers come to Carbondale with a 7-7 record, and winners of their last two. WSU defeated North Texas, 4-3, and #43 Southern Methodist University (SMU), 5-2. The team is led by Fatima Bizhukova, who is 10-4 this spring.Â
The match is schedule to start at 2 p.m. and will be inside the sports blast, located behind Carbondale High School and University Mall.Â
