After two rounds of play, the SIU Women's Golf team finished the Saluki Invitational in second place. The two-day, 36-hole tournament, was combined into one day due to impending weather on Monday.
Southern finished the tournament with a final score of 624, 48 over par, seven strokes behind first place IUPUI who won the tournament.
Head Coach Alexis O'Brien said she had the team play more aggressive than they have in the past.
"I knew we were down to IUPUI by more than a few," O'Brien said. "We had at least a 10-shot lead over the third-place team, so I made a coaching decision to play more aggressively on a few holes. It wouldn't cost us anything if it didn't go as planned."
While it didn't result in a win for Southern, the tournament marks the Dawgs' sixth top-five finish and ninth top-10 finish this season.
Freshman Moyea Russell (+1) was the individual tournament champion, making it her first collegiate win. Russell shot a 71, her lowest score yet, and 74 for a combined total of 145.
Russell's first round score tied for second in top-first round individual score and her 36-hole score tied her for the fourth lowest score in the Saluki Invitational record book.
"I'm so proud of Moyea," O'Brien said. "She is such a great player and her future is very bright at SIU. This is the first of many wins for her Saluki career. She got into trouble and played smart and made some awesome putts."
Russell's win marks back-to-back Salukis winning the tournament. Assistant Coach Brooke Cusumano won the honor last year.
Seniors Alice Ho and Hanna Netisngha also finished within the top-10 for Southern. Ho's (+5) placed fourth while Netisingha (+10) tied for ninth with Morgan Frazier from the Naval Academy.
The Salukis have one tournament left for the season before heading to the Missouri Valley Conference. The Dawgs will compete in the Jan Weaver Invitational hosted by Murray State on April 6-7.
